The Experiences We Have

There’s a favorite story of mine behind this scene related to the making of the audiobook.

When you begin the creation of an audiobook (via ACX, the company I used), you audition voice actors who volunteer to read a scene. I wanted a scene with the interaction of Nathan and Sharon because at the time, I was highly anticipating employing both a male and female voice actor.

I had two scenes in mind with Nathan and Sharon: one at the swimming hole or another at the waterfalls. I asked seven readers who I saw were online that day (all of whom just happened to be ladies, BTW), who I knew read the book and asked which scene they would recommend for the voice actors to read?

In a former life, I was a data analyst. If you ask seven people their opinion on something, you end up with ten responses. (I’m not kidding.) Every one of them said the swimming hole scene! When I pressed them as to why they picked that scene over the other, the response was nearly unanimous: the range of emotions connected with that scene would show if the voice actor could play the role.

It was hard to argue with that logic.
